Azelaic Acid is one of my favorite products to use when treating different skin conditions. It is found in whey and rye and is safe to use for many conditions. It has recently become a popular product after NBC News released an article about Azelaic Acid.
Now, many of my patients are asking me what it could be used for and how to get it.
Treat top three conditions Azelaic Acid can be used for:
- Acne
- Blackheads
- Whiteheads
- Papules
- Pustules (pimples)
- Cysts
- Acne Scaring / pigmentation
- Rosacea
- Redness or flushing
- Swelling
- Thickening skin
- Red and irritated eyes
- Visible blood vessels
- Acne-like breakouts
- Hyperpigmentation
- Melasma
- Dark Spots
- Sun damage
- Photo aging
*Azelaic Acid is safe and can even be used if pregnant.
Two different formulas:
- Finacea – 15%, gel or foam.
- Azelex – 20%, cream.
Azelaic Acid 15% is usually my choice and recommendation, but patients can also find Azelaic Acid 10% over the counter.
One downside of this medication is that it can be expensive when it’s a prescription. In our clinic we have a prescription formula which is a 15% Azelaic Acid formula sold at a reasonable price.
How to use:
- Apply twice a day
- Safe to combine with other treatments such as Retin-A, Glycolic Acid, and Salicylic Acid.
